Our blog series continues in the next district: Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna has more to offer than just its famous brewery of the same name: here you can definitely enjoy more than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.
What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and with around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – haggling is explicitly welcome here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activity on a former drill ground. So: Switch on the relaxed strolling mode.
Upon arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftop terraces in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt', you have a wonderful view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring returns, and we all hopefully can enjoy these wonderful moments with friends. Just add it to your to-do list for 2021!
And since we are currently writing about gastronomy establishments in Ottakring, we absolutely have to tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest wine tavern in Vienna, located opposite the Old-Ottakring parish church, is a true institution and still a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians today. The name '10er Marie' derives from the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - as well as from the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is off the beaten tourist path: it is usually full here in the summer! ;)
Who among you has ever heard someone order "a Eitrige und a 16er-Blech" at the sausage stand? In the finest Viennese dialect, this refers to a cheese krainer and a can of Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces beers — which have also won awards, by the way! — but it also serves as an event location. A guided tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is highly recommended, not least because of the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the "16th beer district" can currently also be ordered online!
If someone is feeling cooped up at home due to all the home office work and restrictions during the lockdown, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the terminal station of the U-Bahn line U3, it takes a good half hour to pass by the beautiful Ottakringer Cemetery and reach the top: The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Vienna vineyards – and with a workout for strong calves. If that seems like too much movement after all: Bus line 46A also takes you up to Wilhelminenberg.
