WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT MISS IN THE 16TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA

by AKKADIA - 15. Jun 2021

We continue with our blog series to the next district: Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna offers not only its famous brewery of the same name: there is definitely more to enjoy here than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfeld Belt, there is much to discover and experience.

THE LONGEST MARKET IN THE CITY

What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and, at around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – haggling is explicitly encouraged here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activity on a former drill ground. So: Switch to relaxed strolling mode.

CONFUSED ROOFTERRACE

Upon arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftop terraces in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt', you have a wonderful view of the hustle and bustle of the market activities all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring returns and hopefully we can all enjoy these lovely moments with friends. Just add it to your to-do list for 2021!

THE 10 MARIE

And since we are currently writing about gastronomy businesses in Ottakring, we absolutely have to tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest heuriger (wine tavern) in Vienna, located opposite the Alt-Ottakringer parish church, is a true institution and still today a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians. The name '10er Marie' derives from the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - on one hand, and from the daughter of the original Buschenschank (wine tavern) innkeeper on the other. And even though the 10er Marie is off the usual tourist trails: it is actually always full here in the summer! ;)

THE 16-PAN SHEET

Who among you has ever heard an order for "a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech" at the sausage stand? In the beautiful Viennese dialect, this refers to a Käsekrainer and a can of Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces - by the way, also award-winning! - beers, but it also serves as an event location. A tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is absolutely recommendable, not least because of the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the "16th Beer District" can currently also be ordered online!

OUTLET AT WILHELMINENBERG

For anyone who may feel confined at home during the weeks of lockdown due to all the remote work and restrictions on going out, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the terminal station of the U-Bahn line U3, it takes about half an hour to get there, passing the beautiful Ottakring Cemetery: The climb is rewarded with a fantastic view over the vineyards of Vienna – and with a workout for strong calves. If that seems like too much exercise: The bus line 46A also takes you up to Wilhelminenberg.
