WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT MISS IN THE 16TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA

The blog series continues in the next district: to Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna not only boasts its famous brewery of the same name: here, definitely more than just beer can be enjoyed! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.

THE LONGEST MARKET IN THE CITY

What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and, at around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the vibrant and multicultural atmosphere and the enticing offers – haggling is explicitly encouraged here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you then reach the Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activities on a former parade ground. So: switch to relaxed strolling mode.

WIRRE ROOFTOP

Upon arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftop terraces in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt,' you have a wonderful view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, spritzers, or food – as soon as spring returns and we all hopefully get to spend these lovely moments with friends. Just add it to your to-do list for 2021 already!

THE 10 MARIE

And since we are currently writing about gastronomy businesses in Ottakring, we definitely must tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest wine tavern in Vienna, located opposite the Old Ottakring parish church, is a true institution and still a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians today. The name '10er Marie' derives, on one hand, from the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and, on the other hand, from the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is off the usual tourist paths: it is usually always full here in the summer! ;)

THE 16-PIECE PAN

Who among you has ever heard someone order "a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech" at the sausage stand? What is meant here, in the finest Viennese dialect, is a cheese sausage and a can of Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces award-winning beers, but also serves as an event location. A tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is highly recommended, not least due to the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the "16th beer district" can currently also be ordered online!

OUTFLOW AT WILHELMINENBERG

If, perhaps during the weeks of the lockdown, you find yourself feeling confined due to all the home office work and restrictions on going out, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the terminal station of the U-Bahn line U3, it takes about half an hour past the beautiful Ottakringer Cemetery to reach the top: The climb is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Viennese vineyards – and with a workout for strong calves. If that seems like too much activity for you: The bus line 46A also takes you up to Wilhelminenberg.
