WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT MISS IN THE 16TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA

It continues with our blog series in the next district: to Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna has more to offer than just its famous brewery of the same name: here you can definitely enjoy more than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.

THE LONGEST MARKET IN THE CITY

What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and, at around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – bargaining is explicitly encouraged here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activity on a former drill ground. So: Switch to relaxation strolling mode.

CONFUSED ROOFTERRACE

Arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftop terraces in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt,' you have a magnificent view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring returns and we can all hopefully enjoy these wonderful moments with friends again. THE 10 MARIE

And since we are currently writing about restaurants in Ottakring, we definitely have to tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest wine tavern in Vienna, located opposite the Old Ottakring Parish Church, is a true institution and even today remains a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians. The name '10er Marie' derives, on one hand, from the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and, on the other hand, from the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is off the usual tourist trails, it is actually always full here in the summer! ;)

THE 16-TRAY

Who among you has ever heard an order for "a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech" at the sausage stand? Here, in the beautiful Viennese dialect, a Käsekrainer and a canned Ottakringer beer are meant. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces – by the way, also award-winning! – beers, but it is also available as an event location. A tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is highly recommended, not least because of the unique combination of diverse historic architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the "16th beer district" can currently be ordered online!

RUN-OFF AT WILHELMINENBERG

For those who may feel cooped up during the weeks of lockdown due to home office and restrictions on going out, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the terminal station of the U-Bahn line U3, it takes about half an hour to walk past the beautiful Ottakring Cemetery up to the hill: The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Vienna vineyards – as well as a workout for your calves. If that ends up being too much movement for you: Bus line 46A also takes you up to Wilhelminenberg.
