We continue with our blog series in the next district: to Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna has more to offer than just its famous brewery of the same name: there's definitely more to enjoy here than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.
What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and, with around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere as well as the tempting offers – bargaining is expressly encouraged here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activities on a former parade ground. So: Switch to relaxed strolling mode.
Upon arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftops in Vienna for you: From the roof of ‘WIRR am Brunnenmarkt’, you have a wonderful view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring comes back and hopefully we can all enjoy these lovely moments with friends. Just make sure to add it to your to-do list for 2021!
And since we are currently writing about gastronomy establishments in Ottakring, we must of course tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest wine tavern in Vienna, located opposite the Old Ottakring Parish Church, is a true institution and still a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians today. The name '10er Marie' comes from both the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is away from the usual tourist crowds, it is actually always full here in the summer! ;)
Who among you has ever heard an order being placed at the sausage stand for "a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech"? Here, in the loveliest Viennese dialect, a cheese krainer and a can of Ottakringer beer are meant. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces - by the way, also award-winning! - beers, but also serves as an event location. A tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is absolutely recommended, not least due to the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the "16th beer district" can currently also be ordered online!
If perhaps during the weeks of the lockdown, you feel like the walls are closing in on you due to all the home office and movement restrictions, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the last stop of the U-Bahn line U3, it takes about half an hour to walk past the beautiful Ottakring Cemetery: The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Vienna vineyards – and a workout for your calves. If that's still too much movement for you: The bus line 46A also takes you to Wilhelminenberg.
