We continue with our blog series to the next district: Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna offers more than just its famous brewery of the same name: There is definitely more to enjoy here than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.
What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second-largest market in Vienna and, with around 170 stalls and 948 meters long, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – bargaining is explicitly welcome here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will reach the Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activities in a former parade ground. So: Switch on the relaxed strolling mode.
Arriving at Yppenmarkt, we have discovered one of the coolest rooftops in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR at Brunnenmarkt', you have a splendid view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring returns and hopefully we can all spend these lovely moments with friends. Just add it to your to-do list for 2021!
And since we are currently writing about gastronomy establishments in Ottakring, we must of course tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest wine tavern in Vienna, located opposite the old parish church of Ottakring, is a true institution and still a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians today. The name '10er Marie' actually comes from both the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and from the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is away from the usual tourist flows: it is actually always full here in summer! ;)
Who among you has ever heard an order for “a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech” at the sausage stand? This refers, of course, in the finest Viennese dialect, to a Käsekrainer and a canned Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces - by the way, also award-winning! - beers, but it is also available as an event location. A guided tour of the brewery or attendance at one of the numerous events is absolutely recommended, not least because of the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and the latest event technology. And: Deliveries from the “16th Beer District” can currently also be ordered online!
For anyone who might be feeling cooped up during the lockdown weeks due to the home office and restrictions on going out, we recommend a stroll up Wilhelminenberg. From the terminal station of the U-Bahn line U3, it's about a good half hour past the beautiful Ottakring Cemetery: The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Viennese vineyards – and with a workout for toned calves. If that feels like too much movement: The bus line 46A also takes you up to Wilhelminenberg.
