The blog series continues in the next district: Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna not only has its famous brewery of the same name to offer: There is definitely more to enjoy here than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.
What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and with around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – haggling is explicitly welcome here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activity in a former drill ground. So: Switch to relaxed strolling mode.
Arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftops in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt', you have a wonderful view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or food – as soon as spring returns and we all hopefully can spend those lovely moments with friends. Just put it on your to-do list for 2021 already!
And since we are just writing about gastronomy businesses in Ottakring, we must of course tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest wine tavern in Vienna, located across from the Alt-Ottakring parish church, is a true institution and is still a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians today. The name '10er Marie' is derived, on the one hand, from the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and, on the other hand, from the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is located away from the usual tourist crowds: it is actually always full here in the summer! ;)
Who among you has ever heard an order like “a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech” being placed at a sausage stand? Here, in the finest Vienna dialect, it refers to a Käsekrainer and a can of Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces beers—by the way, also award-winning ones!—but also serves as an event location. A tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is highly recommended, thanks to the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the “16th Beer District” can currently also be ordered online!
For those who may be feeling cooped up during the lockdown with all the home office work and restrictions on going out, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the final stop of the U-Bahn line U3, you can walk past the beautiful Ottakringer Cemetery and reach the top in a good half hour: The climb is rewarded with a fantastic view over the vineyards of Vienna – and it's a workout for your calves. If that's too much movement for you, the bus line 46A will also take you to Wilhelminenberg.
