We're continuing our blog series in the next district: Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna has more to offer than just its famous brewery of the same name: There is definitely more to enjoy here than just beer! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.
What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and, with around 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – haggling is explicitly encouraged here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activity on a former drill ground. So: Switch to relaxed strolling mode.
Upon arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftop terraces in Vienna for you: from the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt', you have a wonderful view of the hustle and bustle of the market right up to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring returns and hopefully we can all spend these wonderful moments with friends. Just add it to the to-do list for 2021!
And since we are currently writing about gastronomy businesses in Ottakring, we definitely have to tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest Heuriger in Vienna, located opposite the Old Ottakring parish church, is a true institution and even today remains a meeting point for prominent artists and politicians. The name '10er Marie' originates from both the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and the daughter of the original Buschenschank owner. And even though the 10er Marie is off the usual tourist paths: it is actually always full here in the summer! ;)
Who among you has ever heard someone order “a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech” at the sausage stand? What is meant here, in the loveliest Viennese dialect, is of course a cheese krainer and a can of Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces – by the way, also award-winning! – beers, but it is also available as an event location. A tour of the brewery or attending one of the numerous events is absolutely recommended, not least because of the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: deliveries from the “16th beer district” can currently also be ordered online!
For those who may feel overwhelmed by working from home and restrictions during the lockdown, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the end station of the U3 subway line, it takes about half an hour to pass by the beautiful Ottakring Cemetery and reach the top: The ascent is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Vienna vineyards – and a workout for your calves. If that's still too much exercise for you: The bus line 46A also takes you up to Wilhelminenberg.
