WHAT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT MISS IN THE 16TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA

We continue with our blog series in the next district: Ottakring. The 16th district of Vienna has more to offer than just its famous brewery of the same name: you can definitely enjoy more than just beer here! From the Vienna Woods to the Lerchenfelder Gürtel, there is much to discover and experience.

THE LONGEST MARKET IN THE CITY

What would Vienna be without its Brunnenmarkt? After the Naschmarkt, it is the second largest market in Vienna and with approximately 170 stalls and 948 meters, the longest permanent street market in Europe. Start from Thaliastraße into Brunnengasse and enjoy the colorful and multicultural atmosphere and the tempting offers – haggling is explicitly welcomed here! Heading towards Ottakringer Straße, you will then reach Yppenmarkt, which continues the market activities on a former drill ground. So: switch on the relaxed strolling mode.

CONFUSED ROOFTERRACE

Upon arriving at Yppenmarkt, we discovered one of the coolest rooftop terraces in Vienna for you: From the roof of 'WIRR am Brunnenmarkt', there is a magnificent view of the hustle and bustle of the market all the way to Brunnengasse. Absolutely recommended, whether for coffee, a spritzer, or a meal – as soon as spring returns, and we all hopefully can spend these wonderful moments with friends. Just go ahead and add it to your to-do list for 2021!

THE 10-EURO MARIE

And since we are currently writing about gastronomic establishments in Ottakring, we absolutely must tell you about the 10er Marie. The oldest Heuriger in Vienna, located across from the Alt-Ottakring parish church, is a true institution and still a meeting place for prominent artists and politicians today. The name '10er Marie' is derived, on one hand, from the address - Alt-Ottakring No. 10 - and, on the other hand, from the daughter of the original wine tavern owner. And even though the 10er Marie is away from the usual tourist crowds: it is actually always full here in the summer! ;)

THE 16-BAKE TRAY

Who among you has ever heard someone ordering "a Eitrige and a 16er-Blech" at the sausage stand? Here, in the beautiful Viennese dialect, this refers to a cheese sausage and a can of Ottakringer beer. The Ottakringer Brewery not only produces – by the way, also award-winning! – beers, but it also serves as an event location. A tour of the brewery or a visit to one of the numerous events is highly recommended, thanks to the unique combination of diverse historical architecture and state-of-the-art event technology. And: Deliveries from the "16th Beer District" can currently also be ordered online!

OUTFLOW AT WILHELMINENBERG

If anyone is feeling cooped up during the lockdown weeks due to all the home office and restrictions on going out, we recommend a walk up to Wilhelminenberg. From the terminus of the U3 subway line, it takes about half an hour to pass by the beautiful Ottakringer Cemetery and reach the top: The climb is rewarded with a fantastic view over the Viennese vineyards – and with a workout for strong calves. If that's still too much movement for you: The bus line 46A will also take you to Wilhelminenberg.
