Today we are reporting from the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. A district that stands out primarily for its versatility. In Alsergrund, historical significance meets modern student charm. Here you find iconic hotspots and cozy cafés, but above all: many, many sights and must-dos!
Anyone interested in art and architecture should definitely take a look at the Liechtenstein Garden Palace on Fürstengasse. The owners have collected artworks from around the world over five centuries, and their collection is now considered one of the most significant in the world. The baroque garden, laid out over about five hectares, is also worth seeing, as it offers a perfect opportunity to enjoy some privacy. Those who have seen Schönbrunn may think that a visit to the Garden Palace is unnecessary. However, the Garden Palace has its own unique charm and is definitely worth a visit. Additionally, you will encounter fewer tourists. I promise!
‘mittendrin’ is the name of the establishment founded by the VinziRast community on Währinger Straße. VinziRast is an independent association that not only offers homeless people a place to sleep but a proper home. A place of relaxation and security. With the ‘mittendrin’ establishment, VinziRast provides some of its guests with a stable job. Furthermore, the net profit benefits the Vincentian Community of St. Stephen, the sponsoring organization for VinziRast facilities. By the way: The food is incredibly good and affordable. A project that deserves all the support!
Between Währingerstraße, Schottenring, and Rossauer Lände lies the Servitenviertel. In this picturesque district, trendy venues, beer gardens, and workshops seamlessly line up next to each other. The Servitenviertel is often referred to as 'Little Paris.' We find this designation more than fitting! But it's not just culinary enthusiasts who will enjoy themselves. The Servitenviertel also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. For example, the art-historically significant Serviten Church or the oldest preserved cemetery in Vienna, the Jewish cemetery on Seegasse. So: Think of the Servitenviertel during your next planned walk!
On the university campus in Spitalgasse stands the so-called Narrenturm – named for its shape and its former function. The tower was built in the 18th century as the first psychiatric clinic in continental Europe. Today, it houses the pathological-anatomical collection of the Natural History Museum. But beware: the exhibition is not for the faint of heart! You will learn about the treatment methods of various diseases at the time and about the fates of the individuals whose body parts now serve as teaching and study material. However, those who are not too sensitive can look forward to an exciting journey into the history of medicine.
… offers the Workshops and Cultural House (WUK). And it does so abundantly. With over 12,000 square meters of floor space, the former locomotive factory is one of the largest cultural institutions in Europe. Here you can truly find everything a culture lover desires: live concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, or DJ acts. The spectrum is wide. In summer, the integrated beisl with its green garden attracts many thirsty visitors to the WUK. But no matter the season, we believe the WUK is always worth a visit! Intrigued? Next time we will continue our district tour in the 2nd district of Vienna!
