WHAT YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT MISS IN THE 9TH VIENNESE DISTRICT!

by AKKADIA - 15. Jun 2021

Today we are reporting from the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. A district that impresses mainly with its versatility. In Alsergrund, historical significance meets modern student charm. Here you can find iconic hotspots and cozy cafés, but above all, many, many attractions and must-dos!

BAROQUE JEWEL IN THE CITY CENTER

Anyone interested in art and architecture should definitely take a look at the Garden Palace Liechtenstein on Fürstengasse. The owners collected artworks from around the world for over five centuries and can now count their collection among the most significant in the world. The baroque garden, laid out over about five hectares, is also worth seeing and is perfect for enjoying a little togetherness. Those who have seen Schönbrunn might think that a visit to the Garden Palace is unnecessary. But: The Garden Palace has its own unique charm and is definitely worth a visit. Plus, you'll encounter fewer tourists. Promise!

IN THE MIDDLE INSTEAD OF JUST BEING THERE

‘mittendrin’ is the name of the venue established by the VinziRast community on Währinger Straße. VinziRast is an independent association that provides homeless people not only with a place to sleep but also a real home. A place of relaxation and security. With the venue ‘mittendrin’, VinziRast enables some of its guests to have a fixed job. Additionally, the net profit benefits the St. Stephan Vincent Community, the sponsoring association of the VinziRast facilities. By the way: The food is incredibly good and affordable. A project that deserves all the support!

Small but fine

The Servitenviertel stretches between Währingerstraße, Schottenring, and Rossauer Lände. In this picturesque neighborhood, trendy venues, beer gardens, and craft shops are seamlessly lined up next to each other. The Servitenviertel is often referred to as 'Little Paris'. We find this designation more than apt! But it's not just culinary enthusiasts who get their money's worth. Culturally, the Servitenviertel has a lot to offer as well. For example, the art-historically significant Serviten Church or the oldest preserved cemetery in Vienna, the Jewish cemetery on Seegasse. So: Think of the Servitenviertel on your next planned walk!

AN UNUSUAL MUSEUM

At the university campus in Spitalgasse stands the so-called "Narrenturm" – named after its shape and former function. The tower was built in the 18th century as the first psychiatric clinic in continental Europe. Today, it houses the pathological-anatomical collection of the Natural History Museum. But beware: the exhibition is not for the faint of heart! Visitors learn about the treatment methods of various diseases at the time and the fates of the people whose body parts now serve as teaching and study material. However, those who are not too squeamish can look forward to an exciting journey into medical history.

SPACE FOR CULTURE ...

… offers the workshop and cultural house (WUK). And it offers plenty. With over 12,000 square meters of floor space, the former locomotive factory is one of the largest cultural institutions in Europe. Here you can find truly everything the cultural heart desires: live concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, or DJ acts. The range is wide. In the summer, the integrated Beisl with its green garden attracts many thirsty visitors to the WUK. But no matter the time of year, we believe the WUK is always worth a visit! Are you intrigued? Next time, we will take our district tour to the 2nd district of Vienna!
