WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT MISS IN THE 9TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA!

by AKKADIA - 15. Jun 2021

Today we report from the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. A district that stands out primarily for its versatility. In Alsergrund, historical significance meets modern student charm. Here you find iconic hotspots and cozy cafés, but above all: many, many sights and must-dos!

BAROQUE JEWEL IN THE CITY CENTER

Anyone interested in art and architecture should definitely take a look at the Gartenpalais Liechtenstein on Fürstengasse. The owners collected artworks from around the world over five centuries and can now count their collection among the most significant in the world. The Baroque garden, laid out over about five hectares, is also worth seeing, as it offers the perfect setting to enjoy some time together. Those who have seen Schönbrunn might think that a visit to the Gartenpalais is unnecessary. But: The Gartenpalais has its own unique charm and is definitely worth a visit. Additionally, you'll encounter fewer tourists. Promised!

IN THE MIDDLE INSTEAD OF JUST BEING THERE

"‘mittendrin’ is the name of the establishment founded by the VinziRast community on Währinger Straße. VinziRast is an independent association that offers homeless people not just a place to sleep but a real home. A place of relaxation and security. With the establishment 'mittendrin', VinziRast provides some of its guests with a permanent job. Moreover, the net profits go to the Vinzenzgemeinschaft St. Stephan, the supporting organization of the VinziRast facilities. By the way: The food is incredibly good and affordable. A project that deserves all the support!"

Small but fine

Between Währingerstraße, Schottenring, and Rossauer Lände lies the Servitenviertel. In this picturesque neighborhood, trendy venues, gardens, and workshops seamlessly line up next to each other. The Servitenviertel is often referred to as 'Little Paris.' We find this designation more than fitting! But it's not just culinary enthusiasts who will enjoy themselves. The Servitenviertel also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. For example, the art-historically significant Serviten Church or the oldest preserved cemetery in Vienna, the Jewish cemetery on Seegasse. So: Think of the Servitenviertel on your next planned walk!

AN UNUSUAL MUSEUM

On the university campus in Spitalgasse stands the so-called Narrenturm – named for its shape and its former function. The tower was built in the 18th century as the first psychiatric clinic in continental Europe. Today, it houses the pathological-anatomical collection of the Natural History Museum. But beware: the exhibition is not for the faint-hearted! Visitors learn about the treatment methods of various diseases at that time and the fates of the people whose body parts now serve as teaching and study material. However, those who are not too sensitive can look forward to an exciting journey through medical history.

SPACE FOR CULTURE ...

... offers the Workshops and Cultural House (WUK). And that is more than enough. With over 12,000 square meters of floor space, the former locomotive factory is one of the largest cultural institutions in Europe. Here you can find everything a cultural heart desires: live concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, or DJ acts. The range is broad. In the summer, the integrated bistro with its green garden attracts numerous thirsty visitors to the WUK. But no matter the season, we believe the WUK is always worth a visit! Interested? Next time, we will continue our district tour in the 2nd district of Vienna!
