WHAT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT MISS IN THE 9TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA!

by AKKADIA - 15. Jun 2021

Today we report from the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. A district that stands out primarily for its versatility. In Alsergrund, historical significance meets modern student charm. Here you can find iconic hot spots and cozy cafés, but above all, one thing: many, many sights and must-dos!

BAROQUE JEWEL IN THE CITY CENTER

Anyone interested in art and architecture should definitely visit the Garden Palace of Liechtenstein on Fürstengasse. The owners have collected artworks from all over the world for over five centuries and can count their collection among the most significant in the world today. The Baroque garden, laid out over about five hectares, is also worth seeing and offers a perfect opportunity to enjoy a bit of intimacy. Those who have seen Schönbrunn might think that a visit to the Garden Palace is unnecessary. But: The Garden Palace has its own unique charm and is definitely worth a visit. Furthermore, you will encounter fewer tourists. Promise!

IN THE MIDDLE INSTEAD OF JUST BEING THERE

"‘mitten in‘ is the name of the establishment founded by the VinziRast community on Währinger Straße. VinziRast is an independent association that offers homeless people not just a sleeping place, but a real home. A place of relaxation and security. With the establishment 'mitten in', VinziRast provides some of its guests with fixed employment. Additionally, the net profits benefit the St. Stephen's Vincentian Community, the sponsoring association of VinziRast facilities. By the way: The food is incredibly good and affordable. A project that deserves all support!"

Small but fine

Between Währingerstraße, Schottenring, and Rossauer Lände lies the Servitenviertel. In this picturesque neighborhood, trendy venues, beer gardens, and artisan shops seamlessly line up next to each other. The Servitenviertel is often referred to as 'Little Paris.' We find this description more than fitting! However, it's not just culinary lovers who will enjoy themselves. The Servitenviertel also has a lot to offer in terms of culture. For instance, the artistically significant Servite Church or the oldest preserved cemetery in Vienna, the Jewish cemetery on Seegasse. So, remember to think of the Servitenviertel for your next planned walk!

AN UNUSUAL MUSEUM

On the university campus in Spitalgasse stands the so-called Narrenturm – named for its shape and former function. The tower was built in the 18th century as the first psychiatric clinic in continental Europe. Today, it houses the pathological-anatomical collection of the Natural History Museum. But beware: the exhibition is not for the faint-hearted! One learns about the treatment methods of various diseases at that time and the fates of the people whose body parts now serve as teaching and study materials. However, those who are not too sensitive can look forward to an exciting journey into medical history.

SPACE FOR CULTURE ...

… offers the workshops and cultural house (WUK). And that in abundance. With over 12,000 square meters of floor space, the former locomotive factory is one of the largest cultural institutions in Europe. Here you can find truly everything that the cultural heart desires: live concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, or DJ acts. The range is broad. In summer, the integrated beisl with its green outdoor seating attracts numerous thirsty visitors to the WUK. But no matter the season, we find that the WUK is always worth a visit! Interested? Next time, we'll head to the 2nd district of Vienna on our district tour!
