WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT MISS IN THE 9TH DISTRICT OF VIENNA!

by AKKADIA - 15. Jun 2021

Today we are reporting from the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. A district that stands out primarily for its versatility. In Alsergrund, historical significance meets modern student charm. Here you can find iconic hotspots and cozy cafés, but above all one thing: many, many sights and must-dos!

BAROQUE JEWEL IN THE CITY CENTER

Anyone interested in art and architecture should definitely visit the Garden Palace Liechtenstein on Fürstengasse. The owners have collected artworks from around the world for over five centuries and can now count their collection among the most significant in the world. The baroque garden, laid out over approximately five hectares, is also worth seeing and is perfect for enjoying a little intimacy. Those who have seen Schönbrunn might think that a visit to the Garden Palace is unnecessary. But: The Garden Palace has its own unique charm and is definitely worth a visit. Plus, you encounter fewer tourists. I promise!

IN THE MIDDLE RATHER THAN JUST BEING THERE

'mittendrin' is the name of the establishment founded by the VinziRast community on Währinger Straße. VinziRast is an independent organization that provides not only a place to sleep for homeless people but a real home. A place of relaxation and security. With the establishment 'mittendrin', VinziRast offers some of its guests a permanent job. Additionally, the net profits benefit the Vinzenzgemeinschaft St. Stephan, the sponsoring association of the VinziRast facilities. By the way: The food is incredibly good and affordable. A project that deserves all the support!

Small but fine

Between Währingerstraße, Schottenring, and Rossauer Lände lies the Servitenviertel. In this picturesque neighborhood, trendy venues, beer gardens, and workshops blend seamlessly together. The Servitenviertel is often referred to as 'Little Paris.' We find this designation more than fitting! But not only culinary lovers will get their money's worth. Culturally, the Servitenviertel also has a lot to offer. For example, the art-historically significant Servite Church or the oldest preserved cemetery in Vienna, the Jewish cemetery on Seegasse. So: Think of the Servitenviertel on your next planned walk!

AN UNUSUAL MUSEUM

At the university campus in Spitalgasse, there is the so-called Fool's Tower – named after its shape and its former function. The tower was built in the 18th century as the first psychiatric clinic in continental Europe. Today, it houses the pathological-anatomical collection of the Natural History Museum. But beware: the exhibition is not for the faint of heart! You will learn about the treatment methods of various diseases at the time and the fates of the people whose body parts now serve as teaching and study material. However, those who are not too squeamish can look forward to an exciting journey into the history of medicine.

SPACE FOR CULTURE ...

… offers the workshop and cultural house (WUK). And it does so abundantly. With over 12,000 square meters of floor space, the former locomotive factory is one of the largest cultural institutions in Europe. Here you can find truly everything that a culture enthusiast desires: live concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, or DJ acts. The range is wide. In summer, the integrated beisl with its green garden also attracts many thirsty visitors to the WUK. But no matter the season, we believe that the WUK is always worth a visit! Got a taste for it? Next time, we will continue our district tour in the 2nd Viennese municipal district!
