Today we are reporting from the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund. A district that is particularly known for its versatility. In Alsergrund, historical significance meets modern student charm. Here you can find iconic hotspots and cozy cafés, but above all one thing: many, many sights and must-dos!
Anyone interested in art and architecture should definitely visit the Garden Palace Liechtenstein on Fürstengasse. The owners have collected artworks from around the world for over five centuries, and today their collection is considered one of the most significant in the world. The Baroque garden, laid out over approximately five hectares, is also worth seeing and provides the perfect setting to enjoy a bit of privacy. Those who have seen Schönbrunn might think that a visit to the Garden Palace is unnecessary. However, the Garden Palace has its own unique charm and is definitely worth a visit. Plus, you'll encounter fewer tourists. I promise!
‘mittendrin’ is the name of the establishment founded by the VinziRast community on Währinger Straße. VinziRast is an independent organization that provides not only a sleeping place for homeless people but a true home. A place of relaxation and security. With the ‘mittendrin’ establishment, VinziRast enables some of its guests to have a fixed job. Furthermore, the net profits benefit the St. Stephen's Vincent Community, the sponsoring association of the VinziRast facilities. By the way: The food is incredibly good and affordable. A project that deserves all support!
The Servitenviertel stretches between Währinger Straße, Schottenring, and Rossauer Lände. In this picturesque neighborhood, trendy venues, beer gardens, and artisanal shops seamlessly line up next to each other. The Servitenviertel is often referred to as "Little Paris." We find this description more than fitting! But it's not just culinary enthusiasts who will be satisfied. Culturally, the Servitenviertel also has a lot to offer. For example, the historically significant Serviten Church or the oldest preserved cemetery in Vienna, the Jewish cemetery on Seegasse. So: Remember to think of the Servitenviertel during your next planned walk!
At the university campus in Spitalgasse, there is the so-called Narrenturm – named for its shape and its former function. The tower was built in the 18th century as the first psychiatric clinic in continental Europe. Today, it houses the pathological-anatomical collection of the Natural History Museum. But beware: the exhibition is not for the faint of heart! You will learn about the treatment methods of various diseases at the time and the fates of the people whose body parts now serve as teaching and study material. However, those who are not too sensitive can look forward to an exciting journey into the history of medicine.
… offers the workshop and cultural house (WUK). And that to a sufficient degree. With over 12,000 square meters of floor space, the former locomotive factory is one of the largest cultural institutions in Europe. Here you can find truly everything that a cultural heart desires: live concerts, exhibitions, dance and theater performances, or DJ acts. The spectrum is wide. In summer, the integrated Beisl with its green courtyard also attracts many thirsty visitors to the WUK. But no matter the season, we believe that the WUK is always worth a visit! Gotten a taste for it? Next time, we'll venture into the 2nd district of Vienna on our district tour!
